The 628th Civil Engineer Squadron, with its 508 military and civilian personnel, is responsible for directing design, construction, maintenance, and repair activities across Joint Base Charleston's $3.2B power projection platform. Our responsibilities cover 24,000 acres, 9 million square feet of floor space, 4 runways, 2 wharfs, 5 piers, 34 miles of rail, and 460 miles of road spread over 4 geographically separated locations - the Air Base, Weapons Station, Short Stay, and North Auxiliary Airfield. In addition, we provide base fire protection services, manage 1,525 family housing units, execute an annual budget of over $50 million, provide base disaster preparedness support, provide comprehensive environmental management services, and direct explosive ordnance disposal for local and worldwide Department of Defense and Presidential support requirements.
Since September 11, 2001, the 628 CES has supported Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, and Operation NEW DAWN on an almost continual basis, deploying over 900 personnel to support the Global War on Terror. The 628 CES has a long history of distinguished recognition to include multiple Air Force and Major Command level awards. In 2014, the unit was named Air Mobility Command's Large Civil Engineer Squadron of the Year.
The 628 CES continues to provide a solid foundation for Air Mobility Command's premier airlift wing, as well as critical installation support to 60-plus mission partners from every branch of the Armed Forces.
