7/2/2012 - JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. -- This past week commemorates an important day in American history. Nearly 236 years ago, the colonies of this nation declared themselves independent of Britain. On July 4, 1776, America was born; along with democracy. That's why we celebrate Independence Day each year on the Fourth of July.

As we celebrate Independence Day with family and friends, let's not forget about the many sacrifices it took for our country to achieve its greatness. Today, we enjoy freedom because of those sacrifices. We should realize that without the courage and bravery of those before us, we might not have this freedom. Each and every Airman and Sailor should be proud of what they do. Your courage and bravery to defend our country has contributed to the past 236 years of freedom. Your sacrifices will allow future generations to enjoy the same freedoms that we have today.

With that, I say thank you for your commitment, dedication and service to our country. I hope you are having a safe holiday and may we celebrate another 200 years of freedom.
