Rhodes, along with approximately 20 remaining crewmembers of the USS Franklin (CV 13) and their family members, gathered for a final reunion. A memorial service in Yorktown’s Hangar Bay II took place near the Franklin exhibit and honored the more than 800 men who were killed in action March 19, 1945, as well as the crewmembers who have since passed. The number 13 is displayed on the USS Yorktown’s (CV-10) island in honor of the USS Franklin (CV-13), as the surviving crewmembers gather for their final reunion May 17, 2013, at Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum, Mount Pleasant, S.C. The Franklin participated in Pacific Theater operations during World War II and was in service from 1944 to 1945. The ship is best known for the March 19, 1945 attack, when two Japanese bombs struck the ship. The Franklin earned the designation as the most heavily damaged U.S. aircraft carrier to survive World War II and the ship and crew remain the most decorated in U.S. Navy history – earning two Medals of Honor, 19 Navy Crosses, 22 Silver Stars and 1,100 Purple Hearts.
